Method
Make the Tomato Sauce
- Heat olive oil in a saucepan over medium heat. Add the diced onion and season lightly with salt and pepper.
- Cook until soft and translucent.
- Add the butter and allow it to melt.
- Stir in the passata and basil.
- Let the sauce simmer gently for 45 minutes to 1 hour, stirring occasionally.
Cook the Gnocchi
- Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.
- Add the gnocchi and cook until they float, about 1–2 minutes.
- Transfer directly into the tomato sauce using a slotted spoon.
Assemble
- Preheat oven to 450°F.
- Spread a layer of tomato sauce on the bottom of a baking dish.
- Add half of the gnocchi, then top with mozzarella and Parmigiano.
- Repeat with remaining gnocchi, mozzarella, and Parmigiano.
- Bake for 5–10 minutes until melted and bubbling.
- Finish with fresh basil and serve immediately.
